Monster mash day 12!!

I'm a mom who writes books in her spare time: translation--I hide in the bathroom with my laptop and lock the door while the kids destroy the house and smear peanut butter on the walls. I was born in Utah but lived in Kansas until I was 13, in Texas until I was 18, and attended college in Hawaii—studying marine biology. I'm now back in Utah--"happy valley". I'm married to a wonderful husband, James, and we are currently raising 6 rambunctious children. My interests are reading, writing (of course), martial arts, visual arts, creating Halloween props, and spending time with family.

I signed with Clean Teen Publishing in 2013. My first published book Rising, quickly hit the best-seller lists and has maintained its status on those lists since it's release in September 2013. The sequel in The Rising Series titled, Descending, was released in late March 2014. It also hit best-seller status--reaching all the way to #1 in Mythology on Amazon.

It's 1792 and Hope is on the run. She finds shelter in a glen called Sleepy Hollow. Luck is with her as the town is unexpectedly looking for a new teacher and Hope is hired for the job.

Unfortunately, not everything is looking up for her. Not only is the mayor out to get her fired and the local witch determined to slice her up and brew her organs into potions, but hidden under the floorboards of her quaint little cabin, she finds a man. His name is Conall.

Conall is demanding, he's ornery, and though he has undeniably handsome features, he is missing something of vital importance...

His body.

Q&A with the Author:

1.       When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author? I started on a whim after reading a scene that was cut from Stephanie Meyer's Twilight book. It was actually pretty bad. I thought, "I can write better than that." I was wrong. But by the time I realized it, I had fallen in love with writing. Six years later, my writing got better and my first book, Rising, was published.
2.      Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it?  I am working on a spin-off of my Rising series called The Lost Gods Series. This series has demigods, gods, and other mythological creatures. It is geared toward young adult readers who love paranormal romance.
3.     What is your favorite writing snack? I'm currently trying to lose weight, but if dreams were real, Peanut M&M's would have no calories and I would eat them by the bag full as I write.
4.       If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? Why? What food would you serve? I would have dinner with Xanthus and his friends from my Rising series. As Dagonians, they only eat freshly killed fish. And it's proper eating etiquette to rip off the fish's head before consuming it. I think this would really be a sight to see.
5.       Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it? I learned a great deal of early American history. One thing that was truly sad came about when I wanted a Native American character in my book. I researched the natives that lived in the area of Sleepy Hollow. To my horror, I found out that they had all been wiped out by the white men. The tribe native to that area was called the Weckquaesgeck Indians, and every last man, woman, and child was killed by the white men before the setting of my book in 1792.That's simply heart-breaking.
6.       How do you relax, or what do you enjoy doing when you are not writing? I don't relax often. Right now I'm back in college studying to be an English teacher. I also have six kids and a hobby that both my husband and I share--building Halloween props for our haunted house. We usually average about a thousand trick-or-treaters at our house every Halloween.
7.       What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it? I guess you could say, I dream of being able to teach and encourage young people to write and discover the joy of creating your own story. And I'm working on my teaching degree with about a year left until I graduate.
8.       What do you fear most? I have a terrible fear of heights. But there's a twist to it. I'm not afraid for myself, I'm afraid anytime my family members are up high. I will not let my husband hang Christmas lights on the house. I can do it, but not anyone I love.

9.       What was your favorite Halloween Costume? My favorite costume I've worn is when I dressed as a corpse with an apple on top of my head and a bullet hole in my forehead. Yeah, I'm just a tad twisted.

Monster mash day 11!!

Scarlett St. Clair lives in Oklahoma with her husband. She has a Master’s degree in Library Science and Information Studies and spends a lot of time researching reincarnation, unsolved murders and Greek mythology–all of which made it into her debut novel, When Stars Come Out (Oct 2018).

Anora Silby can see the dead and turn spirits into gold coins, two things she would prefer to keep secret as she tries to lead a normal life at her new school. After all, she didn’t change her identity for nothing.

As it turns out, hiding her weirdness is just one of many challenges. By the end of her first day, she’s claimed the soul of a dead girl on campus and lost the coin. Turns out, the coin gives others the ability to steal souls, and when a classmate ends up dead, there’s no mistaking the murder weapon.

Navigating the loss of her Poppa, her mother’s mistrust, and Roundtable, an anonymous student gossip app threatening to expose her, are hard enough. Now she must find the person who stole her coin before more lives are lost, but that means making herself a target for the Order, an organization that governs the dead on Earth--and they want Anora and her powers for themselves.

Q&A with the Author:

1.     When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?
o   I started writing when I was thirteen. I read the Lord of the Rings on Christmas Break and fell in love with the world and the characters. I really just wanted to create something like that world. So I did...and I never stopped.
2.     Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it?
o   I’m working on the sequel to WSCO. I’m also working on a spinoff story set in the same world. I’ll have more information on the sequel to WSCO in January.
3.     What is your favorite writing snack?
o   My favorite writing snack is almonds. I also like to have a decaf Americano with half and half or an unsweet iced tea nearby.
4.     If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? Why? What food would you serve?
o   I would have dinner with any of them, but I think it would be REALLY hilarious to invite Shy, Thane, and Roth to dinner. They would just banter with each other. I would serve pizza because they are all teenage boys (well, except Roth, but he’s in his twenties) and they can eat a lot of food.
5.     Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
o   Yes! I really think WSCO was my book of growth. I learned my writing process and came to embrace it. Before now, I tried to force myself to try a lot of other writing processes without really analyzing how I write best. Now I know that I will ALWAYS write a draft around 40-50,000 words, then just rewrite and rewriting, building upon my characters and world. It’s such a relief to understand how YOU write.
6.     How do you relax, or what do you enjoy doing when you are not writing?
o   Since I have a full-time job, writing is usually how I relax, but I go see movies with the husband or spend time with my nephew or exchange student (she’s from France and like a little sister!).
7.     What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it?
o   Probably to be a New York Times Bestselling author...but you can all change that! ;)
8.     What do you fear most?
o   I fear being disconnected from people who I consider family.
9.     What was your favorite Halloween Costume?
o   Hmm. I’ve loved being Belle the last couple of Halloweens. I was Belle in her yellow dress and Belle in her blue dress.

Monster mash day 8!!

Ann Swann was born in the small West Texas town of Lamesa. She grew up much like Stevie-girl in The Phantoms series, though she never got up the nerve to enter the haunted house.

Ann has done everything from answering 911 Emergency calls to teaching elementary school. She lives in Texas with her husband, Dude, a rescue cat named Oscar, and a part-time box turtle named Piggy.

When she’s not writing, Ann is reading. Her to-be-read list has grown so large it has taken on a life of its own. She calls it Herman.

Stutter Creek (book one) is a romance, brilliantly hidden within a suspense-filled tale of a psychotic serial killer with a chip on his shoulder. It is also a classic tale of young love lost, and a life of regrettable what-ifs.

Q&A with the Author:

1. When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author?I began writing short stories in my teens. I kept them in a spiral notebook under my bed. I couldn't keep my sister out of my diary so I felt I had to hide everything!

2.   Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it? I am currently finishing up a romantic suspense and a YA novel. Both are contemporary and both have elements of suspense and romance.

3.   What is your favorite writing snack? My favorite writing snack is anything chocolate with diet vanilla Coke.  They balance each other out, right? Calorie-wise, I mean...

4. If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? Why? What food would you serve? If I could have dinner with any of my characters I think it would be with Big John in Stutter Creek or Reece in The Remains in the Pond because they are both hunks ... wait, so is Quinn in All For Love. Shoot. Any of those. And we'd have jalapeño poppers and margaritas. Yum!

5. Do you ever get Writers Block and how do you work through it? Writer's block? Nah. If I get stuck on a story, I just close it and go to another story. I always have several going at once. Always. And pretty soon the sticky story will work itself out. If it doesn't, it wasn't a good story.

6. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?  I do learn something with each book. I usually learn something about myself and what I would or would not do in a given situation. Sometimes it's hard to make my characters do things that go against my normal beliefs!

7. How do you relax, or what do you enjoy doing when you are not writing? To relax I love to walk our local walking trails around town as well as going to our local drive-in movie and catching up on live music at the auditorium. Going to see Bob Dylan soon. Just saw Melissa Etheridge last week. So good!

8. What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it? My largest unfulfilled dream is to see every historical tourist spot in the United States. I'm working on it ... slowly.

9. What do you fear most? My greatest fear is becoming incapacitated and becoming a burden to my family.

10. What was your favorite Halloween Costume? My favorite Halloween costume? The first year we my hubs and I were married, my mom (a very talented seamstress) helped me create a witch's costume for myself and a sexy vampire costume for my new husband. They were so good, we won a contest at the local dance hall. And may I just add, this was about twenty years before Bella and Edward. LOL

Monster mash day 7!!

Catina worked her way through college as a TV reporter and a dating game show host. She's a sucker for Young Adult romance stories (both real and make-believe). She has a panache for match-making and loves that many of her "set-ups" have resulted in marriages.

After spending most of her adult life in Las Vegas, Catina traded in tumbleweeds for earthquakes and now lives with her husband and four children near San Diego, California. If she's not home, chances are you can find her at the beach, Disneyland or In-N-Out Burger.
Angela Larkin writes clean teen romance and is a big fan of kissing (in life and in books). She's been a gold miner, a pool cleaner, a mannequin dresser, and a teacher. She's lived a true romance: meeting her husband in a case of mistaken identity. They recently moved with their four children from the sparkling city of Las Vegas to the shade of the North Carolina Pines. Chances are, she's reading past bedtime.

True love doesn't always mean a happy ending. Presley and Landon finally have a chance at a real relationship when they travel back in time, but their leap backward to two months before his accident has altered reality: Landon has no memory of Presley.

Hurt and lonely, Presley is still determined to save his life, even as Landon's death-date looms. He's alive for now, but nothing is like it was . . . Before.

Q&A with the Author:

Angela’s Answers / Catina’s Answers

1)     When did you start writing, and was there a specific event or person who influenced you to become an author:
a)     I've always enjoyed writing in school, but I started writing short stories and bookish things on my own after high school. It was my way of dealing with a huge unrequited crush! Reading the Grapes of Wrath was formative moment for me as a writer. It was the first book that powerfully showed me how incredible writing can be.
b)     I've loved writing stories my whole life but developed a passion for it in college when I started writing for our university's newspaper and TV station. One morning, the idea for BEYOND came to me and I knew I had to morph my journalism skills into that of an author, because the story had to be told!

2)            Are you currently working on a project, and if so, can you tell us anything about it?
a)     Right now I'm querying a romance set in rural NV. It's like The Breakfast Club meets Holes. I'm currently working on a romance about a British Prep School boy forced to accompany his father on a business assignment to a tiny Tennessee mountain town. There he meets a girl struggling to support her family. Though total opposites, they have a lot to learn from each other . . . and of course they fall in love!
b)     I am currently working on a middle-grade adventure. Because I have a request for the full manuscript, I can't say much!

3)            What is your favorite writing snack?
a)     Trader Joe's dips and hummus.
b)     I love to eat flavored popcorn while I write. I can feel like I'm indulging without doing too much damage!

4)          If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which ones would you choose? Why? What food would you serve?
a)     I'd have dinner with Reese from the Beyond series because I like the funny boys. We'd eat microwave convenience store burritos and Dr. Pepper - his favorite:)
b)     I'd have to have dinner with Reese and Landon together. I lover their brotherly cousin dynamic and their senses of humor. I'm also a little star struck by their awesome skiing skills and ravishing good looks. Ha! They have huge appetites so I'd probably grill piles and piles of rib-eye and serve it with a yummy pasta salad and dessert.

5)           Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
a)      I learned I can do harder things than I thought I could. And that all skills can be improved upon with practice, no matter who you are.
b)     I've learned to write what's in your heart. Write, write, write and do not edit as you go. Save the editing for after your entire first draft is complete. I've also learned that my writing improves so much when I hit it every day. Big breaks aren't awesome when it comes to writing skills.

6)           How do you relax, or what do you enjoy doing when you are not writing?
a)      I eat brownies in bed and watch Netflix shows about food, decorating or kissing.
b)     I love going to the movies so much. We are an opening night kind of family. I also love to read as much as I can. At any given time, I'm reading a book for book club, one in the genre I'm writing, one for my kids and one off my personal list.

7)           What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it?
a)     I'd love to get my MFA in creative writing. Currently, I'm researching schools and hyperventilating about taking the math portion of the GRE.
b)     Ooohhhh - that's a tough one - but I'd have to say seeing my work on the big screen. That would be incredible.

8)          What do you fear most?
a)     Betrayal.
b)     Spiders. Being bitten by a brown recluse in the night.

9)            What was your favorite Halloween Costume?
a)     Without my mom's permission, I bought a Harem Girl costume when I was nine. As an adult, I see the folly in this, but at the time I LOVED the purple veil and the gold sequins belt and headband. And it even came with brass finger cymbals!
b)     My favorite Halloween costume wasn't really for me - it was one I created for my son. He was Wolverine. We grew his hair out for four months, found an awesome leather jacket at the thrift store and bought him his first pair of jeans. Ha ha! We nailed it and everywhere we went, people wanted a picture.
